Cases of a parasitic infection that can cause “explosive” diarrhea have surged across the United States in recent weeks, according to health officials.

Cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic foodborne illness that can cause "explosive" diarrhea, are being reported across the United States, including in Rhode Island.

Michigan's health authority said on Friday that more than 1,500 cases had already been registered.
